Lower School Robotics

Dear Parents,

We are pleased to offer a Robotics Club at University Academy for our 4th and 5th grade students. 16 students will be selected, 8 from 4th grade and 8 from 5th grade. We realize that the demand for this program is high, and the standards we hold all who participate will be higher. Punctuality and being present is necessary, and students will ONLY be allowed 2 absences and 2 late pick ups, during the 13 week program.

The purpose of the club is to offer students an opportunity to have fun and learn some very basic programming and robotics. The club will use Thames & Kosmos robotics kits purchased with a grant from the Friends of University Academy.

There will be a $20 fee for each student. The fee will be used to cover the cost of after school snacks for each of our 13 meetings, and each student will receive their own robotics club t-shirt. Students who are interested should write a letter stating why it is important that they be a part of the club (handwritten or typed). Also, they should achieve two recommendations signatures from lower school teachers, along with their $20 fee payment.

During club meetings, the students will learn to use the components of the kits to build robots

and learn to program their robots using the Blockly programming software(We use this in our lower school computer science class via code.org). After they have mastered basic programming, club meetings will involve the students in programming their robots to accomplish tasks and solve challenges. Problem solving and logical thinking skills will be emphasized. Students will be working in small teams of 4. Teams will be tasked with creating their own, unique, robot for their final project.

The Robotics Club will begin on Tuesday, September 24th, 2019, and end on Tuesday, December 17, 2019.

Signed permission forms and program fee should be turned in to Mr. Hadjian by Thursday, September 19, 2019.

My child has my permission to join the Robotics Club. I understand that this club will meet on Tuesdays after school and that my child will need to be picked up at 4:30 pm. Upon 2 late pick ups student will be dropped from the program.  I understand that continued membership in the Robotics Club is contingent on my child exhibiting appropriate behavior and utilizing their time in a constructive manner.

I am joining the Robotics Club because I have an interest in learning more about robotics and programming. I understand that I will be asked to leave the club if my behavior is inappropriate for an extracurricular school activity. I understand that I will be responsible for any equipment that I use during club activities.
