Helzberg, Sr. Media Center/Library The mission of the University Academy library media program is to provide resources that support and enrich the school’s instructional goals and afford opportunities for students and staff to become effective users of information. Library goals are: Instill a love for books and reading, train analytical and fearless information seekers, and expand global awareness through literature and media.
University Academy Library opened in October, 2005. The facility is expansive, most inviting and provides services for some 1,100 students from one library. The collection of over 24,000 volumes is current, correlated to the K-12 curriculum, and focused on students’ needs – academically and leisure reading.

- October – Teen Read Week
- March – Lower School - READ ACROSS AMERICA celebrates the life and works of Dr. Seuss (Theodor Geisel) born over 100 years ago on March 3rd. Events include a Parade!
- May – Children’s Book Week
- May – 1st Grade Annual Peter Rabbit Tea follows their exploration of the World of Beatrix Potter, English author and illustrator of her 23 “Little Books”.
Reading Incentives
- Grades K-1 – Missouri Building Block Book Nominees
- Grades 1-2 – Show-Me Reader Award Nominees
- Grade 1 – Caldecott Award Challenge
- Grade 3 – KC3 Reading Challenge
- Grades 4-6 – Mark Twain/Newbery Award Challenge – Students that complete the challenge attend the Reading Reptile/Rockhurst University DNA Literature Festival.
- Grades 7-8 – Truman Reading Award Nominees – Each grade participates in 3 Battle of the Books – Final Battle: Grade 7 versus Grade 8.
- Grade 9-12 – Gateway Award Nominees – Discussion Groups monthly on a nominated title.
