At University Academy, there is no social promotion. At every grade level, there are specific requirements for promotion to the next grade. For example, criteria for promotion to 7th grade include passing competency tests in math, writing a five paragraph essay with no mistakes, and reading on grade level. For promotion at the high school levels, students must meet rigorous college preparatory standards. A minimum of 25 credits are required for graduation.
Among those 25 credits are minimums of:
- Four language arts credits
- Three mathematics credits
- Three science credits
- Three social science credits
- One fine arts credit
- One physical education/health credit
- One practical arts credit
Also included in the minimum course requirements are a number of specified core curriculum credits such as two credits in a foreign language. All high school courses are designed to provide the necessary skills to succeed in college. Students must re-take and pass any courses they fail.
In addition to the courses that University Academy offers, the school also encourages its juniors and seniors to take dual-credit classes at various local universities including UMKC and Rockhurst. University Academy pays for the vast majority of tuition for the classes that the students take at those colleges, although parents are responsible for some of the matriculation fees. We believe this is a valuable program as it not only effectively broadens our course offerings, but also allows our students to experience actual college classes and gives them confidence that they can succeed in college. Many of our seniors graduate with significant amounts of college credit.
